We learned about Lake this week through his timeline!

Yay! We were 1st place in the box top collection! Thank you to all that saved, clipped, and counted! We get to choose between a pizza or donut party!  The kids were so excited!!!

This week:

We learned about characters and found their traits. I read the students some of my favorite books and we visualized the story in our minds.

The Character show was a hit. They wrote about their character and read it to their 3rd grade buddies. Thank you for helping with this!!






In math, we built numbers with tens and ones blocks and we used greater than and less than signs to compare the numbers.


Next week:

We will be learning about adding with 3 numbers in math next week. During reading, we will read books about animals and make our own questions about the book. We will make a zoo enclosure while continuing to learn about tens and ones.

We learned more about Cooper through his timeline this week.

Reminder: Early out on Wednesday Oct. 28th

This week:

We learned about the season fall. We researched some information about fall on the computer and we also read tons of stories about the season. While reading those stories, we focused on the main idea and details.


We also spent some time talking about Fire Safety. My brother is a firefighter and he came and discussed fire safety and showed some of his gear.




In math, we sorted shapes and built large shapes with smaller ones. We also split into groups and practicing addition and subtraction.

In writing, they wrote some creative stories about what they like to do in the fall.


Next week:

Thank you for reading with your children each night and practicing their sight words!!!

We will be focusing on characters and comparing them. I sent this note home on Wednesday.

Please have your child bring one of their favorite books to school on Monday Oct. 26th. We will be learning about the main character in each of their stories. On Friday Oct. 30th, the students will get to dress up like their favorite character and tell us about them.Once I learn more about their characters, I will send home a more detailed note of what they need to wear. 

They will only being dressing up for part of the day so please have them wear regular clothes to school.

In math, we will start learning about place value with tens and ones.

Terri got to share her timeline with us this week!

This week:

Reading: We read stories about Christopher Columbus and informational books about sink and float. We discussed what the table of contents does during guided reading.

Math: We made a poster of the attributes of shapes. They learned how many sides and points. We also built different objects with shapes.

Writing: We finished our opinion stories on fairy tales. We started learning how to write a list with commas.

We also learned about continents and oceans. They built a ship like Columbus to see if it would sink or float.

We will be doing Autumn activities. We will research about fall on a computer and read books to find the main idea and details. In math, we will continue to learn about shapes and use them to review addition and subtraction skills.  We will write a story about something we do in the fall.

Brod Bagert was at Jefferson today! The students had a blast listening to him animate his poems and the first graders got to write a poem with him. They really enjoyed it!

This week:

Reading:

We read more fairy tales and practiced retelling them. We also compared and contrasted some different versions of Cinderella.

Math:  We learned about shapes and their edges and vertices. We also made designs and added up all the shapes we used. We made castles out of 3-D and 2-D shapes.





Writing: In writing, they wrote about their favorite fairy and gave their opinion about why they liked it.


Next week:

Sight words:  all but not were what
Please practice all the words we have learned! They are in their planners and on the back of their folders.

We will be learning about Christopher Columbus. We will make a ship to see if it will sink or float and discover continents and oceans on the world map.

In reading, we will be finding the main idea and details of stories we read about Christopher Columbus and we will subtract with shapes in math.

Brod Baggert is coming to Jefferson on Wednesday of next week. He is children's' poet and first grade gets to write a poem with him! Also our wonderful PTO is purchases all of his books for our classroom!

Charlie shared his timeline with us this week!


Please read every night and mark it in the reading log. If you miss a night, read 2 books the next night and write them down 1 per line.

This Week:

We had a lot of fun learning about fairy tales and making a map. We read different versions of different fairy tales and discussed the beginning, middle, and the end of each book. Next week they will use that to help them retell the fairy tales we read.

In math, we focused on subtraction. The math symbols are still a little tricky for some. They are doing a great job adding!

In writing, we wrote our own fairy tale. The students were the characters, but they got to pick the setting.

We began making maps of one of the fairy tales we read. We learned about map keys and the compass rose.




Next week:

They are getting more difficult, please practice writing and saying them!

We will continue to make our maps and retell fairy tales. We will be learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes in math. They will get to create a castle out of the shapes.
